What is Fuchuk?

Fuchuk is a soy based product also known as tofu skin, yuba, bean curd skin, bean curd sheet or bean curd robes. In fact, fucuk is the film or skin forms on the liquid surface when you boil soy milk. Fuchuk is very popular in Malaysia, Japan and China.

Once the films are form, you have to collect them and dry them into yellowish sheets known as tofu skin. Tofu skin is not technically a proper tofu, because it is not produced using a coagulant. However, it has a similar texture and flavor of some tofu products.

Types of Fuchuk

You can buy fuchuk fresh, half-dried or in dried form. If you purchase dried tofu skin, you have to re hydrate it in water before use. It is often used to wrap dim sum.

Fuchuk texture is slightly rubbery, and it is also manufactured in bunched, folded and wrap forms. You can use it to replace meat in vegetarian cuisine.

There are many ways you can eat fuchuk; the most popular include:

Dried Yuba Stick: Yuba sticks retain their original shape and this bunched tofu skin is called tofu chicken.
Meat Alternatives: With fuchuk, you can make meatless meat consisting of rolling thin sheets of tofu skin, tie them closed, and steam until a meaty texture and flavor is developed. You can imitate chicken breast, duck etc. and it is very popular in vegetarian diets.
Chopstick: You can also steam the tofu skin on a chopstick until it forms a log. Each slice will be circular with a square hole in the centre, which looks a lot like old Chinese coins.
